Memorial Day

Memorial Day is viewed as the unofficial start of summer. But, that’s not its purpose. It’s a day to commemorate and honor our war dead.

This holiday is not about cookouts.

It is a day to reflect and thank those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms — their lives.

But, do you know how Memorial Day got started?

It originally began as Decoration Day in the late 1860s following the Civil War. Union General John A. Logan asked for a day of prayer on May 30, 1868. Because of this, some southern states didn’t participate.

Then, after World War I, the day evolved to remember fallen military personnel in all wars.

In 1968, Memorial Day was officially established as the last Monday in May. That is why the date is fluid each year. That is when it also officially became a federal holiday.

This is a solemn day and not one meant for drunken picnics. Please share this to remind people of the reason for their long weekend!
