It’s been a good year for video game adaptations. Gamers have received news about an Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry TV show, and we just saw that Call of Duty officially has a movie coming. The exciting news isn’t over, though, as BioShock fans just got some great news. This is everything we know about the story and filming updates on the BioShock movie adaptation.
Video game adaptations are getting more and more popular over the years. With the amazing effects and animations in movies today, it’s getting easier to produce accurate adaptations that will impress fans. And with recent live-action adaptations, like The Last of Us on HBO and Fallout on Prime Video, it’s clear that these adaptations are getting ample views to make it worthwhile.

And those are just a few examples. With the family-friendly Minecraft and Super Mario Bros. movie, or even the thrilling horror Until Dawn adaptation, both movie buffs and gamers are enjoying the stories. And with the BioShock movie adaptation, which puts the classic first-person shooter franchise on the big screen, gamers have been on the edge of their seat waiting for updates.
Originally released in 2007, BioShock is a beloved franchise with die-hard fans hoping for an accurate adaptation. The games take place mostly underwater, where the game sees players controlling Jack, the lone survivor of a plane crash into the Atlantic Ocean in 1960.
The beloved game received the announcement for a game adaptation in 2022 by Netflix, and is set to be directed by Hunger Games franchise creative Francis Lawrence, who recently directed The Long Walk. Thankfully, we’ve gotten a few key updates about the film. First, the producer Roy Lee confirmed a key element of BioShock’s story, saying that it will be based on the first BioShock game.
Lee also talked about the movie in terms of production timeline, saying that BioShock would be the next movie that director Lawrence makes after wrapping production on The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.

The full quote reads: “Well, The Long Walk became a reality because BioShock was delayed for a little bit, where we had to do some more script work. And so as the script work is being done, we shot The Long Walk, and he was already committed to doing the next Hunger Games movie. And so it’s just waiting for him whenever the Hunger Games is completed, and the script is just being worked on right now.”
With The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping set for November 20, 2026, it looks like we won’t have the movie anytime soon. Lee also talked about the BioShock movie adaptation in 2024, saying that it was scaled back to become a more “personal” film, as Netflix reportedly sought quality over quantity with more manageable budgets.
Even still, it’s exciting news to see updates about the film that has been pushed back several times. With this adaptation seeming to stick, fans are patiently, yet eagerly waiting for more information and the release. Keep checking back for more information on entertainment or to learn about more upcoming adaptations.
