Tim Allen is known for starring in some beloved sitcoms. Indeed, Home Improvement and Last Man Standing are two of the most popular sitcoms of all time.

That’s why fans are very excited about Allen’s new sitcom Shifting Gears, which premieres on ABC in January. On Thursday, a first look of Shifting Gears was released, and it looks like one hilarious show!

First Look At Shifting Gears

Shifting Gears stars Allen, 71, and 2 Broke Girls alum Kat Dennings, 38. They play a widowed father Matt and his estranged daughter Riley, who find themselves having to move back in together as they repair their relationship.

“Is that my GTO? I built that 15 years ago and somebody stole it,” Matt, who owns a classic car repair shop, says at the start of the trailer as Riley drives in.

“Hi, dad,” she greets Matt, who replies by exclaiming, “And there’s the thief!”

Words proceed to flash across the screen, saying, “Coming home is a bumpy road.”

“I’m crawling home because I’m broke,” Riley tells her father. “I need a place to stay until I figure out what the rest of my life looks like.”

“So a couple of days!” Matt quips as the studio audience bursts out laughing.

The trailer then gives viewers some insight into the dynamic between this father and daughter.

“I asked if you locked that back door, you looked back at me and you gave me a double bird,” Matt recalls.

“I was 18, the double bird is how I ended all of our conversations,” Riley fires back in response.

That’s when the trailer ends, leaving the audience wanting more. Check out the trailer for yourself below.

Allen Is ‘Very Excited’ About Shifting Gears

Allen previously starred on the sitcoms Home Improvement from 1991 until 1999 and Last Man Standing from 2011 until 2021. He’s made no secret of the fact that he’s very excited to be returning to the sitcom world with Shifting Gears.

“I am very excited,” Allen told Entertainment Tonight back in March. “You know, I tried really hard with Home Improvement, and then Last Man Standing. Maybe three’s a charm! Maybe I can finally make a statement with this.”

“It was a big event for me, ’cause I really loved Home Improvement, [so] to do Last Man Standing was a big push, and then I love that family so much,” Allen explained. “But then ABC said, ‘If you come up with an idea,’ and I said, ‘If I did it, it would be this.’ And we came up with this idea, and we’re getting there.”

“I’m very geeked to be given this opportunity,” he concluded with a smile.

Allen Loves Doing Sitcoms

As Last Man Standing came to an end, Allen opened up about how much he loves the sitcom format.

“The word that keeps me alive is ‘grateful.’ I love what I do. I get far more enjoyment out of entertaining people than anything monetary,” Allen told US Weekly at the time. “I love the live audience we have. I tell them every night, ‘This is old-school stuff, what television and broadcast started with.’ I don’t know the future, but this [show] is rare.”

“We did the same thing as we did with Home Improvement,” he continued. “It’s all about the relationships — we don’t get into topical stuff. But [now], I’ve just got girls, so you see how a man differs in his perspective when he has so many strong women around him. We never make fun [of each other]. It’s an affectionate family. I like the fact that we honor and make fun — at the same time — marriage, institution, kids, babies, people. But in the same way, we honor it. We’re not being snarky about it.”

Shifting Gears premieres Wednesday, January 8, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. It will be available to stream on Hulu the next day.
