It’s been 25 years since the sitcom Home Improvement went off the air, but it is still loved by millions of fans to this day. Now, Tim Allen has returned to the Home Improvement set for the first time in decades, and he has something very exciting in the works!
Allen Returns To Home Improvement
Last week, Allen took to social media to post a photo of himself on the same Disney lot where he spent years filming Home Improvement from 1991 until 1999.
“Shot the new pilot last Friday here on the Disney lot where it all began,” Allen, 71, wrote alongside a photo of himself next to the sign for the Home Improvement lot. The sign pays tribute to the “8 seasons of ‘tools and laughter'” that the sitcom brought to the world.
Allen’s New Sitcom
Allen is currently working on a new sitcom Shifting Gears, which has already been picked up by ABC. This is Allen’s potential third major sitcom after Home Improvement and Last Man Standing, which ran from 2011 until 2021.
“I am very excited,” Allen told Entertainment Tonight earlier this year. “You know, I tried really hard with Home Improvement, and then Last Man Standing. Maybe three’s a charm! Maybe I can finally make a statement with this.”
“It was a big event for me, ’cause I really loved Home Improvement, [so] to do Last Man Standing was a big push, and then I love that family so much,” Allen explained. “But then ABC said, ‘If you come up with an idea,’ and I said, ‘If I did it, it would be this.’ And we came up with this idea, and we’re getting there.”

Allen’s Shifting Gears Character
In Shifting Gears, Allen plays a gruff widower named Matt, who owns a classic car restoration shop. Matt is someone who is set in his ways and enjoys his routine, but his life is turned upside down when his estranged daughter and her family come to live with him. Needless to say, hilarious hijinks ensue from there!
“I’m very geeked to be given this opportunity,” Allen gushed.
Deadline reported that the role of Matt’s estranged daughter will be played by Kat Dennings of 2 Broke Girls fame. His grandchildren will be played by The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers star Maxwell Simkins and newcomer Barrett Margolis.
Allen is executive producing the show, which will also be written and executive produced by Mike Scully and Julie Thacker Scully. The non-writing executive producers of Shifting Gears are Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements, Richard Baker, and Rick Messina, according to Variety.

Allen’s History
Born in Denver, Colorado in 1953, Allen became a popular standup comedian in the 1980s. It was Home Improvement, however, that made him a household name.
Aside from his sitcoms Allen is also known for starring in the beloved The Santa Clause movie franchise. For the past two years, he’s starred in the Disney+ spinoff series The Santa Clauses as well.
Home Improvement is one of the most popular sitcoms of all time, and it still holds up to this day. Here’s hoping that the lot where it was filmed brings Allen’s new sitcom some luck!
