Ransom Canyon Renewed

After more than two months since the 10-episode season aired, Ransom Canyon has been greenlit for a second season. The series is based on Jodi Thomas’ books.

At renewal time, a season two writer’s room, led by showrunner April Blair, was already running with continued storylines. There are some rumors about a September start for filming, which takes place in New Mexico.

When interviewed about the renewal, Blair said, “I couldn’t be happier that Netflix is ready to get back in the saddle for Ransom Canyon. Our dreamy little corner of Texas Hill Country is full of stories still untold, and we can’t wait to bring them to our incredible fans. Get ready for another ride.”

What Happened in Season 1?

The first season of Ransom Canyon follows three ranching families in the titular town where their lives and legacies are strained by loss, love, and loyalty in Texas Hill Country. Plus, a mysterious cowboy arrives in Ransom, dredging up old secrets and raising the stakes of the families’ claim over the land.

At the heart of everything is a slow-burn will-they/won’t-they romance between rancher Staten Kirkland and community leader Quinn O’Grady.

The show spent four weeks on the Global Top 10 TV (English) list and reached Top 10 TV in 77 countries. While it did not reach #1, Ransom Canyon renewed for a second season.

Returning Cast Members

While the season two cast isn’t confirmed just yet, we can speculate that most of our season one favorites are returning. This includes Josh Duhamel, Minka Kelly, Eoin Macken, Lizzy Greene, Andrew Liner, Garrett Wareing, Jack Schumacher, and Marianly Tejada.

We do know that Yancy’s wife shows up at the end, and while she was played by Erica Dasher in the season finale, the casting has not been confirmed yet.

Behind the Scenes

April Blair is an executive producer on the show with Dan Angel and Josh Duhamel. The season one writing team includes Blair, Joe Fazzio, Paul Haapaniemi, Laura Nava, and Lucas Rojas. These scripts were directed by Amanda Marsalis, David McWhirter, Meera Menon, and Michael Offer.

What’s Next for Season 2?

Season 1 left us with some closed storylines, but also several cliffhangers.

Quinn and Staten get together after ten episodes, but Quinn takes a job at the New York Philharmonic to keep her Ransom dance hall open. Will Staten move with Quinn to the Big Apple? Or will he once again let her down and stay in his roots in Texas? Plus, there were some rocky moments for the couple on Staten’s side, too, as he leaves his twine bracelet behind in the dance hall after an argument.

When asked about his character possibly moving to New York City, Josh Duhamel commented, “Can you imagine Staten living in a studio apartment in New York? … I just don’t think it’s someplace Staten would move … but I’d like to find out.”

Since she is moving to New York, Quinn entrusts the dance hall to Ellie to keep it running in her absence. Unfortunately, Ellie’s got her own problems with fiancée Yancy, who inherited Cap Fuller’s ranch as his long-lost grandson and may also already have a wife. Yikes. Will Yancy keep the land and not sell? What’s going on with the secret wife?

While the truth about Staten’s son’s death may be revealed, there is a lot to discover in Ransom Canyon.
