Netflix has announced that it will be rebooting the beloved television show Little House on the Prairie, 40 years after the original series went off the air!

Little House On The Prairie Reboot

Netflix told People Magazine that the reboot will be “part hopeful, family drama, part epic survival tale and part origin story of the American West.”

I’m sold!

The streaming platform went on to say that “this fresh adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s iconic semi-autobiographical Little House books offers a kaleidoscopic view of the struggles and triumphs of those who shaped the frontier.”

The showrunner and executive producer of this reboot will be Rebecca Sonnenshine. She is best known for the shows The Boys and Vampire Diaries.

Little House on the Prairie has captured the hearts and imaginations of so many fans around the world, and we’re excited to share its enduring themes of hope and optimism with a fresh take on this iconic story,” said Jinny Howe, Netflix’s Vice President, Drama Series. “Rebecca’s vision threads the needle with an emotional depth that will delight both new and existing fans of this beloved classic.”

It couldn’t come at a better time, with the boom in Western-themed movies and TV shows driven by the popularity of Yellowstone.

Sonnenshine ‘Honored’ To Executive Produce

Sonnenshine chimed in to say, “I fell deeply in love with these books when I was five years old. They inspired me to become a writer and a filmmaker. I am honored and thrilled to be adapting these stories for a new global audience with Netflix.”

Joining Sonnenshine as executive producer will be Trip Friendly for Friendly Family Productions. Friendly’s late father Ed is the person who initially bought the TV and movie rights to Wilder’s auto-biographical novels. This led to the original Little House on the Prairie series, which ran from 1974 until 1983.

“It has been a long-held dream of mine to carry on my father’s legacy and adapt Wilder’s classic American stories for a 21st century audience in a way that brings together fans of both the books and the original television series,” Friendly said. “I am thrilled by our talented creative team led by Rebecca Sonnenshine who are bringing these beloved stories about family, community, and survival to long-time fans and new generations.”

Original Little House On The Prairie

The original Little House on the Prairie starred Melissa Gilbert, Michael Landon, and Karen Grassle. Last year, Grassle spoke out to say that she didn’t think the magic of the original show could be recreated.

“There have been lots of attempts to do a Little House on the Prairie again,” Grassle said. “There have been shows, there have been a musical, and I think we had a unique experience and it can’t be repeated.”

Alison Arngrim starred as the deliciously nasty Nellie Oleson on the original show. She previously told Entertainment Weekly that she would be eager to reprise her role if a reboot were to happen.

“I’m just the right age to play Mrs. Oleson,” she said in 2020. “I’m totally there. I have no shame.”

Netflix has yet to reveal when exactly the Little House on the Prairie reboot will premiere. We can’t wait to watch it when it finally comes out!
