Earlier this week, we reported on the backlash that was pouring in over the series finale of the hit show Yellowstone, which aired on Sunday night. Now, Kevin Costner has broken his silence to address the finale for the first time after he declined to return to film the second half of the fifth and final season of Yellowstone.
Costner Is Asked About Yellowstone Series Finale
Costner, 69, had played John Dutton on Yellowstone ever since the show premiered back in 2018. However, he chose not to return for the final episodes because filming conflicted with that of his four-part Western movie series Horizon.
On Wednesday, Daily Mail caught up with Costner in Aspen, Colorado. When asked for his thoughts on the Yellowstone finale, Costner had some choice words in response.
“I’m not thinking about [the Yellowstone finale], I don’t think I’ve given it any thoughts, we’ll just let it go,” Costner said.
It seems that like Costner, fans are also trying not to think about the Yellowstone series finale. Indeed, immediately after it aired, they were not happy about how the show ended.
“That was probably the worst final season in television history,” one disgruntled fan commented. Another bluntly added, “Dumb ending #Yellowstone #YellowstoneTV.”
“It is official. Game of Thrones is no longer the worst final season of any TV show ever,” a third enraged fan went so far as to state. “Yellowstone has taken that award.”

Costner Refuses To Discuss Alleged Luke Grimes Feud
In Aspen, Costner also shut down a question about an alleged feud with Luke Grimes, who played his character’s son Kayce Dutton on Yellowstone. Costner refused to open up about any possible feud with Grimes. Instead, he would only say that he had not been in touch with his 40 year-old former co-star since the finale aired.
This comes after Grimes admitted that he had not spoken to Costner since the latter’s exit from Yellowstone.
“I haven’t talked to him since [he left],” Grimes told Men’s Health on Monday. “It’s not a case of any hard feelings or anything. It’s just — he’s Kevin Costner. He’s a big deal. I do have his phone number—I just don’t feel like it’s my place to reach out. He can reach out to me if he wants to.”
Grimes went on to reveal that the Yellowstone cast was stunned by all the drama between Costner and the show’s creator Taylor Sheridan, 54.
“None of us saw it coming the way it did, and obviously there was news about possible blowups behind the scenes or whatever,” Grimes explained. “But just like in life, man, these things happen, they happen fast, and they’re not predictable.”
“I lost my father a few years ago,” he continued. “It happened fast, and it was not the way that you would think that that would happen. In life, these things happen and then people have to start making decisions. And in our little Yellowstone world, that helped ramp the show up into a boil.”

Grimes Says ‘The Conflict Was Gone’ When Costner Left
Last week, Grimes admitted that there were some positives to not having Costner on set.
“Hopefully everyone can see that it was time,” Grimes told Esquire. “To be really honest, there was a part of Kevin being gone that meant some of the conflict was gone.”
“Obviously, it didn’t make it super fun to be around,” he continued. “Not pointing any fingers, but it was actually the easiest season we’ve filmed.”
Watch Grimes talk more about this in the video below.
It seems that there may be no love lost between Costner and Grimes. Given how focused on putting Yellowstone behind him that Costner seems to be, however, it’s likely that any feud between the two of them won’t escalate much further from here.
