ABC has ordered a brand‑new Grey’s Anatomy spinoff that trades Seattle’s rain for the dust, danger, and isolation of West Texas.
The network has locked in an as-yet-untitled offshoot set to debut sometime this year and continue into 2027, according to ABC Audio.
Behind the Scenes
The series comes from Shonda Rhimes and longtime Grey’s Anatomy writer‑producer Meg Marinis, who co‑created the project and will executive produce alongside Shondaland heavyweight Betsy Beers and Ellen Pompeo, who portrayed the titular role of Dr. Meredith Grey.
The 56-year-old actress has since stepped back from the scrubs, but she never really left Grey’s Anatomy. After fronting the series as Dr. Meredith Grey since its 2005 debut, Pompeo shifted out of her full‑time leading role during Season 19 in 2023. Even so, she’s remained a steady presence behind the scenes – continuing to narrate the show, pop up in select episodes, and help steer the franchise as an executive producer.
The Texas Spinoff
The new drama centers on a rural Texas medical center, described as the final stop for emergency care before the landscape turns into endless miles of nothing.
Marinis said she’s thrilled to bring a new corner of the Grey’s universe to life – especially one rooted in her home state.
She promised the spinoff will deliver the same emotional punch fans have loved for more than 20 years. Plus, the spinoff will introduce a fresh cast and a completely different environment. She also credited Rhimes for creating a world rich enough to keep expanding.
Excitement for Spinoff

She said in a statement, “This opportunity will bring new characters and stories to life that will embody the same heart, emotion and connection audiences have loved from ‘Grey’s’ for more than two decades – all set in my home state of Texas.”
“I am so grateful to Shonda Rhimes for creating this dynamic world and feel so fortunate that I get to be a part of it.”
Behind the scenes, Shondaland continues its overall deal with Netflix. However, ABC remains the exclusive home of the Grey’s Anatomy franchise. Fans can also look forward to the 23rd season of the original series.
