It’s official. The animated comedy The Great North is not returning for a sixth season. The news lands two weeks after the show wrapped its fifth season on Fox.
The comedy debuted in January 2021 and will now finish its run in September 2025. Keep reading to learn more about the show and other cancellations on Fox.
What was The Great North About?
The Great North centered around the Tobin family and their adventures in Alaska.
Single dad Beef tries to keep his bunch of kids close, including his only daughter, Judy, whose artistic dreams draw her away from the fishing boat and into the local mall. Also in the family unit is Judy’s older brother, Wolf, his wife, Honeybee, middle brother Ham, and little brother Moon.
While their mother is not in the picture, Judy finds solace and guidance in her boss, Alyson, and her imaginary friend Alanis Morissette (voicing herself), who appears to Judy in the Northern Lights.
Behind the Scenes
Bob’s Burgers executive producers Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin created and wrote The Great North. They also served as executive producers and showrunners. Minty Lewis also helped with the script, while Loren Bouchard served as an executive producer.
The series is a 20th Television Animation production and was produced through Bento Box Entertainment.
The voice cast includes Nick Offerman, Jenny Slate, Will Forte, Paul Rust, Aparna Nancherla, Dulce Sloan, Megan Mullally, and Alanis Morissette.
One of Many Cancellations
The Great North isn’t the only TV show getting the axe.
Recently, several shows have announced their end, including many of Fox’s 2025 bubble shows. Rescue HI-Surf, Accused, Alert: Missing Persons Unit, and The Cleaning Lady met their ends this year. While Accused was put on hold with a possibility to return, the rest have been cancelled.
Rescue HI-Surf was the first to go, with the decision being made in early May. Alert, The Cleaning Lady, and The Great North‘s cancellations were delayed until after each series finished its most recent season.
Alert and The Cleaning Lady were thus cancelled in June.
Animation Competition
There had been instability surrounding The Great North‘s future for a little while, especially since the show was left out of Fox’s deal with Fox TV animation.
The deal, announced in April, included four-year pickups for hit animations such as The Simpsons, Family Guy, Bob’s Burgers, and American Dad!, which returns to the network.
Adding in American Dad! and the renewals of Fox’s owned animated series Krapopolis and Grimsburg, the animation slate became too crowded for many other shows. This pointed to The Great North possibly getting cancelled, which is now a reality.
Final Thoughts
Even though the series is cancelled, the network is grateful for the five seasons of The Great North.
