Catfish: The TV Show originated from a 2010 documentary film, Catfish, by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman. The film followed Yaniv “Nev” Schulman as he created a romantic relationship with a woman from Facebook.

Quickly becoming popular, the project led to the TV show in 2012, and coined the term “catfishing,” which is when a person engages in creating a fake online persona.

Nev Schulman hosts the TV series, helping people discover the truth behind their suspicious digital romances and come to terms with the real person behind the screen. The series ran for over 200 episodes.

Behind the Scenes

Nev Schulman, Ariel Schulman, and Max Joseph developed the series. As mentioned above, it premiered in 2012 on MTV and ended with season 9 in July 2024.

Nev Schulman and Max Joseph co-hosted the series for seven seasons, and then in 2018, a rotating list of co-hosts replaced Joseph. This included Elle King, Nick Young, and Machine Gun Kelly.

Later, Kamie Crawford joined Catfish: The TV Show as a permanent host, co-hosting with Schulman for 96 episodes.

Impact of the Series

Catfish did more than just provide a name for digital deception. The series and film prompted international spinoffs in Colombia, Chile, Brazil, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.

It has even delved into popular media, with a recent episode of The Paper centering around an employee being catfished by someone impersonating a celebrity.

There was even Catfish: The Podcast through MTV and Wondery in 2020, which spanned for two seasons before concluding.

Another Canceled Series

After the end of season 9, Catfish: The TV Show‘s future was unknown. It had not received either a renewal or a cancellation from MTV.

Later in 2024, co-host Kamie Crawford announced her exit after six years on the show. Then, last month, Schulman also seemed to be departing the show for another job route.

The long-standing host has earned his real estate broker’s license and is looking forward to helping people buy and sell homes in New York.

With both hosts leaving and the Paramount merger shaking things up, Catfish is now one for the history books.
