There are rough seas for the first-year drama Doctor Odyssey on ABC. Starring Joshua Jackson as the cruise liner’s physician, it’s the only current ABC scripted series waiting for its future: cancellation or renewal.
As fans wait for news about Doctor Odyssey Season 2, talks have been ongoing between executive producer Ryan Murphy and ABC executives.
What’s the Holdup?
The show’s future is resting heavily in Ryan Murphy’s hands. As the creator of the show, Murphy will have to decide whether to continue the story of the cruise ship while also working on other ABC projects like 9-1-1, 9-1-1 Nashville, and All’s Fair (for Hulu).
When interviewed, Eric Schrier, the President of Disney TV Studios, commented, “I really love Doctor Odyssey, I think it’s a wildly inventive show, and we’re doing everything we can to support it. That decision ultimately lies with Ryan Murphy, whether Ryan wants to continue to do it, and he feels like there’s stories to tell that he feels confident in.”
Season 1 Stats
Doctor Odyssey started with a splash for ABC, pulling in 13.6 million cross-platform viewers for the premiere. While later episodes didn’t perform as strongly, the show averages about 8 million viewers in Nielsen’s cross-platform ratings, which measure viewing over 35 days.
This puts Doctor Odyssey fifth among ABC dramas, behind High Potential, Will Trent, 9-1-1, and The Rookie, and seventh overall on the network this season.

Fall 2025 Schedule
More bad news came for fans when ABC announced its 2025 Fall schedule. The newest 9-1-1 spinoff, titled 9-1-1: Nashville, will be taking over Doctor Odyssey’s 9 pm Thursday time slot.
As of now, it doesn’t seem like the show will be included in the Fall 2025 docket, but the series has not been canceled yet. Some reports point to a high production cost as one of the reasons why ABC is hesitant to renew the series.
Looking Towards the Horizon
Doctor Odyssey Season 2 remains on the bubble for now. Many fans are hoping for a renewal in the coming weeks.
While the show did well in viewership, the decision will ultimately fall the the creators and ABC finding the best possible route for this budding new show.
