The former Cheers star Woody Harrelson is speaking out this week to reveal the surprising reason he steadfastly refuses to own a cell phone.

Harrelson Doesn’t Have A Cell Phone

Harrelson’s former Cheers co-star Ted Danson confirmed that Harrelson doesn’t have a cell phone on their SiriusXM podcast “Where Everybody Knows Your Name.”

“And let me explain something about Woody,” began Danson, 76. “He doesn’t have a phone. He’s one of those bullies in life that make other people carry his phone for him.”

Harrelson, 62, replied by explaining that he likes to restrict access to himself.

“Well, I just don’t like to have, you know, to be readily available to any human being at any time,” Harrelson said.

Their guest Kristen Bell of Veronica Mars fame chimed in to add, “I hear that. It doesn’t feel good.”

“That’s not the reason,” Harrelson added. “I like to be in touch with people in a way, but I don’t like the appendage on my appendage.”

Harrelson Doubles Down

Harrelson went on to elaborate on why exactly he feels this way.

“You know, I made a thing where I’m like, ‘Okay, I’m gonna set a two-hour limit on my phone,’ because this is, I’ve given it up now three, three and a half years, but back then I was like, ‘Okay, I’m going to set this limit. Two hours,'” he stated.

“It’s like 9:30. You know, I’ve already hit my limit at 9:30, so I woke up, and I’ve been on it two hours already because, cuz you know how it can just keep going and going,” Harrelson continued.

Danson asked if the “limits” Harrelson set for himself meant that when he did own a phone, he used it only for phone calls or for texting loved ones.

“Texting and, well, I don’t know about apps, but texting and also, you know, whatever, so I just finally, I wanted to be able to be in a, like if I were out to dinner with you, right? And there’s just a lull in the conversation,” he explained. “Oh, I’m on the phone. ‘Oh yeah. Uh-huh. Uh-huh.’ You know, and I look and I’m back down to the device and this.”

Harrelson’s History

Harrelson got his start when he joined Cheers in 1985, playing the popular character of Woody Boyd. He won
an Emmy during his time on the show, which made him a household name. Since Cheers ended in 1993, Harrelson has become a bona fide movie star, and he’s been nominated for three Oscars.

This comes after Harrelson and Danson launched their new podcast Where Everybody Knows Your Name. This podcast will see them reconnect over thirty years after the end of Cheers, both with each other and celebrity guests who they’ve met along the way, with Bell being one of them.

We’re living in a time where people are glued to their cell phones more than ever. Good for Harrelson for ditching this piece of technology completely and choosing to be more present in his life!
