What is Stuart Fails to Save the Universe About?

HBO Max has officially released plot details about the show. The logline states:

“Comic book store owner Stuart Bloom (Sussman) is tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon. Stuart is aided in this quest by his girlfriend Denise (Lapkus), geologist friend Bert (Posehn), and quantum physicist/all-around pain in the ass Barry Kripke (Bowie). Along the way, they meet alternate-universe versions of characters we’ve come to know and love from ‘The Big Bang Theory.’ As the title implies, things don’t go well.”

Behind the Scenes

Chuck Lorre Productions, in association with Warner Bros. Television, is producing the series. Chuck Lorre, Zak Penn, and Bill Prady are executive producers for the series.

When asked about the creation of another spinoff, Lorre commented, “I wanted to do something radical that would take me out of my comfort zone. Something the characters on ‘The Big Bang Theory’ would have loved, hated, and argued about.”

Gathering the Team

From April 2023 to now, there has been a lot of recruiting to find the best people possible for the Big Bang Theory spinoff.

Lorre recruited Prady and Penn as co-writers/executive producers. He also got Big Bang alums Sussman, Lapkus, Posehn, and Bowie signed into talent holding deals with WBTV to star in the spinoff once it’s picked up.

Recruiting Penn is a huge leg up for the spinoff, since he has experience in genre world-building through work on The Avengers, Ready Player One, and Free Guy.

The show also plans on using lots of CGI to create the alternate universes and “incorporate some of the world of science fiction, fantasy into a comedy.”

When asked about the undertaking, Lorre said:

“There’s a lot of CGI. There’s a lot of special technical stuff that — you know, for me in my career, a big production number was two people sitting on a couch, drinking coffee! This is different. … And I’m completely out of my element, which is what I wanted. Which I was hoping to do, something that I had no experience with. And maybe I can learn as we go.”

Expanding on the Legacy of Big Bang Theory

This is the fourth show in the Big Bang universe.

Alongside the original series, which ran for 12 seasons on CBS, the prequel Young Sheldon wrapped its seven-season run at CBS in May 2024. The third spinoff, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, debuted on CBS in October 2024. The show starred Montana Jordan and Emily Osment from Young Sheldon.

When asked about expanding the series into a new show, Channing Dungey, chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. Television Group and WBD US Networks, stated:

“Chuck and Bill have given us one of the most enduring comedies of our time with “The Big Bang Theory,” and we can’t wait to see the universe continue with this new series. With the help of Zak — a masterful storyteller — this next iteration promises to capture the essence of what fans loved about the original series, but with a completely fresh twist.”
