David Tennant, well-known for his role as the Tenth and Fourteenth Doctor in the beloved science fiction series Doctor Who, has a whole new look for the new thriller series The Hack.

Tennant portrayed the regenerating character from 2005 to 2010, and then again in 2023. Along with his prominent role in the series, he’s also known for his role as Crowley in Good Omens. His new thriller series, The Hack, however, has made him nearly unrecognizable to die-hard fans.

The new British TV series, which is based on a true story, tells the story of the investigation into a major phone hacking at News of the World, a discontinued British tabloid. In the series, Tennant will be playing Nick Davies, the journalist taking on the mysterious story.
Screenwriter Jack Thorne, responsible for Help, Best Interests, and Adolescence, is behind the latest project that dives into the phone hacking scandal that shook the foundations of the British media and tabloid journalism.
Tennant spoke on the Off Menu podcast with James Acaster and Ed Gamble about the series, saying it had been “very intense, just because there’s a lot of quite complicated information in that, you know.”
“I’m playing a journalist who sort of broke the case open, and there’s just a lot of quite technical stuff. And you have to be very specific on that because there are a lot of lawyers watching to make sure you don’t say the wrong thing.”

The series will be divided into seven parts, exploring the notorious phone hacking scandal, the closure of the tabloid, and the imprisonment of its ex-editor, Andy Coulson.
The official synopsis reads: “Set between 2002 and 2012, the drama deftly interweaves two real-life stories, the work of investigative journalist Nick Davies, played by David Tennant, who uncovered evidence of phone hacking at the News of the World, and running parallel, the story of the investigation into the unsolved murder of private investigator Daniel Morgan, led by former Met Police detective chief superintendent Dave Cook, played by Robert Carlyle.”
While the new thriller series The Hack doesn’t have a release date yet, it’s expected to be released sometime in 2025 on ITV.
