Back in August, we reported that Kelly Monaco was shockingly fired from General Hospital after playing Samantha McCall on the iconic soap opera for 21 years.
Now, she’s opening up about what happened and how devastating it’s been for her.
Monaco Speaks Out
Monaco, 48, took to Instagram on Sunday to share a solemn post about saying goodbye to the soap opera that she’s worked on for decades.
“Last scene with the Davis girls,” she wrote alongside a photo with her character’s half sisters: Kristina Davis and Molly Lansling-Davis (played by Kate Mansi and Kristen Veragos, respectively) as well as her TV mom, Alexis Davis (played by Nancy Lee Grahn).
“Still doesn’t make any sense to me,” she added.
Fans were shocked at the end of August when Soap Opera Network reported that Monaco would be leaving General Hospital because executives killed off her character. Sources said at the time that Monaco was “blindsided” by her firing.
Grahn commented on Monaco’s latest post with some words of support.
“‘In the middle of every difficulty lies opportunity.’- Albert Einstein. I love you. All will be well,” she wrote. “There are some things a TV mother just knows.”

Monaco’s Mother Sounds Off
Last week, Monaco’s actual mother Carmina took to Instagram to say that her daughter had filmed her last episode of General Hospital a mere “four days shy of the anniversary of her first episode on October 1, 2003.”
“This moment is a difficult one, but knowing that she has had such an incredible, devoted fan base has given her strength,” she continued.
Fans voiced their support for Monaco in the comments section.
“I have watched GH for over 46 years and no character have I ever gravitated to like Sam,” one person wrote. “She had me girl fanning her from day 1. My loyalty and viewing ends with kelly_m23 last scene.”
“@kelly_m23 wishing you all the best!!! GH making a big mistake!!” another fan added. “@abc @generalhospitalabc Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and keep going.”
“I really hoped the petitions and people reaching out about this would have changed their minds,” a third person commented. “I guess it’s too late now. This sickens me. @kelly_m.23 you were the best and I hope to see you on another show ASAP.”

Monaco’s History
Since joining General Hospital back in 2003, Monaco has shot over 2,200 episodes of the show. Prior to that, she portrayed Livvie Locke on the General Hospital spinoff, Port Charles, from 2000 until 2003.
Monaco has been nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award on two occasions. First, for her work on Port Charles in 2003, and later in 2006 for her role on General Hospital.
Monaco is also known for winning the very first season of Dancing With The Stars in 2005. She later returned to the ABC reality dance competition for the “All-Star” season in 2012. Monaco and her partner, Val Chmerkovskiy, ended up coming in third place.
Monaco additionally returned to the Dancing With The Stars stage for a guest appearance in 2017 during the show’s 25th season. During this appearance, she performed the rumba alongside NFL Hall of Famer Terrell Owens and his professional dance partner Cheryl Burke.
General Hospital is currently in its 62nd season. Given her popularity, it continues to be baffling that executives would want to kill off Monaco’s character.
