Kelly Monaco, who has played Sam McCall on General Hospital since 2003, was reportedly left “blindsided” after being fired from the beloved soap opera.
Monaco’s General Hospital Character To Be Killed Off
Monaco’s character will reportedly be killed off in the fall. Sources told The New York Post that Monaco, 48, didn’t see this coming at all, and was completely “blindsided.”
Since joining General Hospital back in 2003, Monaco has shot over 2,200 episodes of the show. Prior to that, she portrayed Livvie Locke on the General Hospital spinoff, Port Charles, from 2000 until 2003.
Monaco has been nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award on two occasions. First, for her work on Port Charles in 2003, and later in 2006 for her role on General Hospital.
Earlier this year, Monaco was briefly replaced on General Hospital by the actress Lindsay Hartley, 46. Hartley had previously filled in for Monaco in a few episodes of the soap opera in 2020 and 2022, respectively.

Monaco’s General Hospital Character
Monaco’s character of Sam McCall is a con artist who is out to reverse her family’s bad luck. She is the biological daughter of mob boss Julian Jerome, played by William deVry, and attorney Alexis Davis, portrayed by Nancy Lee Grahn. McCall is also the illegal adoptive daughter of Cody McCall, who is played by Stanley Kamel.
There have been other changes on General Hospital as of late. Earlier this month, it was revealed that the longtime co-head writer Patrick Mulcahey was leaving the show. Chris Van Etten will then return to the writer’s room with Elizabeth Korte.
Monaco is also known for winning the very first season of Dancing With The Stars in 2005. She later returned to the ABC reality dance competition for the “All-Star” season in 2012. Monaco and her partner, Val Chmerkovskiy, ended up coming in third place.
Monaco additionally returned to the Dancing With The Stars stage for a guest appearance in 2017 during the show’s 25th season. During this appearance, she performed the rumba alongside NFL Hall of Famer Terrell Owens and his professional dance partner Cheryl Burke.

Monaco Celebrates General Hospital’s 60th Anniversary
Monaco’s airdate for her final General Hospital episode is not known at this time. General Hospital has been on since 1963. In fact, it holds the Guinness World Record for the longest-running American soap opera in production.
Back in January, Monaco appeared in the show’s 60th anniversary primetime special. She reunited with her Dancing With The Stars partner Chmerkovskiy, 38, for this event.
“I put my dancing shoes back on for the @GeneralHospital primetime special (featuring a special appearance by @valentin),” she wrote alongside a photo of herself and Chmerkovskiy on Instagram. “’General Hospital: 60 Years of Stars and Storytelling’ airs tomorrow (January 4th) at 10pm on ABC. Don’t miss it!”
After so many years with this beloved soap opera, being fired so abruptly has to be a hard pill to swallow for Monaco. We can only hope that Monaco is able to land on her feet, and that her General Hospital character is given the epic sendoff that she deserves!
