The Simpsons Permanently Kills Off Major Character Fox

After 35 seasons, a character that was introduced in 1991, a major character, meets their end.

Unfortunately, the long-running show has fans upset. After being on the show for 35 seasons, The Simpsons permanently killed off a major character.

In the 37 season, episode 7, “Sashes to Sashes,” the episode features a scene at the First Church of Springfield, where Reverend Lovejoy is hosting a service. However, in the middle of it, organist Alice Glick dies.

Alice Glick is seen lying dead on the organ. Her death ties into the larger story of the episode, which sees Bart trying to run for student council president with Lisa as his campaign manager. And a scene where Principal Skinner leads an assembly “for a dead lady you’ve never met,” explaining that Mrs. Glick has left her estate to the school to fund a new music program.

The executive producer, Tim Long, addressed this plot point in a statement to TVLine and confirmed Mrs. Glick’s death. “In a sense, Alice the organist will live forever, through the beautiful music she made. But in another, more important sense, yep she’s dead as a doornail.”

Alice Glick has been a part of The Simpsons since season 2, episode 21, where she was voiced by Cloris Leachman. She later appeared in season 4, episode 20, portrayed by Nancy Cartwright, while Tress MacNeille voiced her in all later appearances.

Interestingly enough, though, is that Mrs. Glick has been dead before, in season 23, episode 4. In this episode, Bart and Martin Prince’s robotic seal gives her a heart attack. Since then, she’s appeared in a smattering of future episodes, sometimes as a ghost, other times as alive. This latest death, however, is permanent.

Of course, with any long-standing character in long-running shows, fans are truly upset, with X users commenting, saying “Rest in Peace Mrs. Glick!” and others shocked, saying “I think it’s the second time they’ve killed Ms. Glick.”

Before Alice Glick, Larry was the last character to have been killed off in the show. The character appeared numerous times at Moe’s Tavern from season 1, episode 1, until his death in season 35, episode 15.

“When we killed off Larry the Barfly last year, that was a big discussion,” Co-executive producer Cesar Mazariegos said back in September. “But we usually don’t want to get rid of our characters. And it’s such a cartoony world. We know even if Moleman is in a car that explodes, it doesn’t mean he’s dead forever.”

One of the most gut-wrenching deaths that came about was when Marge was killed during a flash-forward scene during season 36’s finale. The Simpsons received immense backlash, even though Marge wasn’t officially dead.

With such a long-running show, fans are passionate about these characters, which makes every death hit heavy, even if it’s not part of the primary family. For more news on your favorite TV shows, keep checking here for the inside scoop.
