Bridgerton is easily one of the biggest historical dramas to stream. And the creation of such a magical story is all thanks to Julia Quinn, the writer of the series that inspired the television show. Unfortunately, Executive Producer Shonda Rhimes revealed Bridgerton’s future recently, specifically when the series will come to an end.

Bridgerton, which is available only on Netflix, first aired in 2020 and has since had three seasons. The series follows the close-knit siblings of the noble and influential Bridgeton family as they navigate the highly competitive social season, where young marriageable nobility and gentry are introduced into society.

The series is set during the 19th century in an alternative Regency-era London Regency era, in which George III established racial equality and granted many people of African descent aristocratic titles due to the African heritage of his wife, Queen Charlotte.
Even though the series only has three seasons, the fourth is expected to be released in 2026, with seasons 5 and 6 already greenlit. Unfortunately, during the Edinburgh Film Festival, Executive Producer Shonda Rhimes revealed Bridgerton’s future, saying that it will have exactly eight seasons, with every Bridgerton child being the focus of one season.

“The Bridgerton series is eight children. Violet Bridgerton and all eight of her children marry. So every season is a child,” Shonda Rhimes said exactly in the statement. Though Rhimes teased that there is “a possibility for spin-offs,” as Bridgerton author Julia Quinn has written other books that are offshoots of the story.
Continuing on her thoughts of the series, Rhimes said, “I didn’t see it as a romance. It was more of a workplace drama.”
“The women don’t have power in other areas of their lives; the power is in how they marry, so it becomes a workplace.” Shonda added, “And that’s where the drama is. More importantly, I could see myself in them. If a black woman in 21st-century America can see herself in regency England, it’s a good story.”

There’s a high chance for spin-offs, as the series has already seen one since Bridgerton’s release: Queen Charlotte. The 2023 mini series focused on Charlotte’s betrothal with King George when she arrives on her wedding day and faces the scrutiny from the monarch’s cunning mother.
But what do Julia Quinn spin-offs look like? There are several, including her Rokesby series, which is a prequel, that focuses on the Rokesby family and their connections ot the Bridgertons. This includes four books that explore more of the charming world and more characters.
Along with that, there is The Bridgerton: Happily Ever After series, which is the second epilogue that provides more closure for each Bridgerton sibling.

While the update that the end might be sooner than what many anticipated, that doesn’t mean the end to the franchise altogether, especially with the huge fanbase that follows the show. When the series first dropped on Netflix, it broke records by becoming the most-watched original series by the streamer at the time.
With this continued path, it’s likely that we’ll see more from the series, even after its end. Thankfully, 2026 is the introduction to season 4, which will only put us halfway through the series, meaning we’ll be able to experience the Bridgerton family for a few more years.
