It was an emotional season finale of American Idol on Sunday night. It marked the end of Katy Perry’s run as a judge, a job that she’d held for the last seven seasons.
After the show, however, Perry shocked her fans by already teasing a possible return!
Perry Sounds Off
Entertainment Tonight caught up with Perry on the red carpet minutes after Abi Carter was crowned as the season 22 American Idol winner.
“I’m a little tired because I’ve been crying all night, but I just so proud, so happy,” gushed Perry, 39. “It feels like a cherry on top that Abi got to win just because it’s been a while since, you know, a while since a female won.”
Perry went on to say that Carter was her “pick from the beginning,” so her victory on the judge’s final season felt like “my present from the universe.”
That being said, Perry was a little surprised by how devastated everyone was by her own exit.
“Well, everybody’s sad. I’m like, it’s not like I’m dying!” she joked. “I’m just going to see you on tour.”
Perhaps it was this reaction that has led to Perry reconsidering her decision to leave the show.
“Keep that seat hot. I mean, who knows,” she teased. “I loved everything I got to experience and learn.”
Perry had been an American Idol judge with Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan since 2018. Both Richie and Bryan will be staying with the show, and no replacement for Perry has been revealed.

Perry Reveals Impact American Idol Had On Her
Perry also discussed how working on American Idol left her feeling “really close to my country.”
“I believe in humanity. I believe in the American Dream,” she explained, going on to describe American Idol as being “one of the last standing examples of a united front, American Dream, people coming from all places, all different beliefs, coming together.”
While the night was one of celebration and fun, Perry’s post-show plans were refreshingly normal.
“At the end of the night I’m gonna go home and pack my daughter’s lunch,” she said.
Perry was referring to her three year-old daughter Daisy, who she shares with her husband Orlando Bloom. She has been married to Bloom, a Hollywood star best known for his work in The Lord Of The Rings film series, since 2019.

Perry Wants To Focus On Her Music
Perry reportedly decided to leave American Idol after this season so that she could focus on her pop music career and on releasing new music.
“I love the show so much, but I want to go and see the world and maybe bring new music,” Perry said back in February, according to Forbes. “It’s going to be a very, very exciting year for all pop star girlies. Let’s just say I’m creating space for my new wingspan.”
Last night, Perry remained tight-lipped about her future plans.
“You’ll have to see,” she said. “You’ll have to wait and see!”

Perry has had a hugely successful career that has seen her win five American Music Awards, 16 ASCAP Pop Music Awards, and five Billboard Music Awards. While she was a fantastic judge on American Idol, it’s certainly understandable that she’d want more time to focus on her music.
