Ratings for the Oscars have been on the decline for years. Hollywood is trying to reinvigorate interest in the self-aggrandizing awards show, but the latest announcement just may have made things worse for the Academy Awards.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is moving up the event earlier in February, but this Tinseltown snooze fest will remain three hours long. Some of the awards won’t be aired live but will show as highlights later in the show. Also, they are adding a new category that really doesn’t belong there. The Academy is going to have a Popular Film category.
This is incredibly self-serving. Popular movies are already rewarded by raking in box office dollars. There are plenty of other award ceremonies that honor these favorite films. Viewers already know what the popular film of the year is and wouldn’t need to tune into this three-hour show to be informed of it.
If the Academy wanted to generate interest in the Oscars, they would make it non-political. Hollywood can’t appear to grasp that average Americans don’t want to be lectured on politics and culture by overpaid actors. These self-serving acceptance speeches turn people away from the Oscars. Before Hollywood made award shows into liberal political rallies, people would tune in for entertainment. We would see our favorite actors perform or be honored. Those days are long gone as award show entertainment has been replaced with political grandstanding and smearing of President Trump and his supporters.
These changes aren’t being well received and highlight how out of touch Hollywood is. Actor Rob Lowe pointed out that this latest announcement signals the end of this era.
The film business passed away today with the announcement of the “popular” film Oscar. It had been in poor health for a number of years. It is survived by sequels, tent-poles, and vertical integration.

The Oscars haven’t been fun to watch for a long time. Adding more awards to the show is not going to draw in any more viewers. Will they introduce Best Horror Movie next?
Nice try Oscars, but this still applies. pic.twitter.com/N9vk06fdVM
