From shows like Survival, Naked and Afraid, to Man Vs. Wild, there are so many shows that focus on the reality of surviving as proof that fans can’t get enough. And the new series heading to Netflix follows the exact same theme, but with a more fascinating origin story.

What started as a man who thoroughly enjoyed spending time outside with buddies in his backyard has quickly turned into a reality show. He started a group for adventure fans, and these wilderness lovers, who were situated in the Pacific Northwest (hence the name), soon became a hot topic.

Essentially, these individuals came together for a backyard BBQ and to play some games, learning and honing their survival instincts, and more. The competition was created by Tony Pieniche and his friend Phil Robinson.

“It went viral immediately, which we did not expect, and we started getting all these phone calls from celebrity survivalists wanting to get involved,” Peniche said. “The event sold out in less than a week, forcing a dramatic pivot from backyard gathering to full-scale production.”

When it comes to reality TV, it will echo some of the tense action shown on Survivor, Alone, and Naked and Afraid. According to the official website, the competition is a two-day event in which people will deal with various challenges such as self-rescue, hunting and weapon building, camouflage, weatherproof shelter building, and more.

“It was kind of an accident,” Peniche said. But the accident is now entering its third year with these games, evolving into something much bigger. And Peniche has been working behind the scenes to turn the challenges into a live event. Peniche is hoping to create something even more spectacular, complete with a money prize for the winner, and celebrity judges including Laura Zerra from Naked and Afraid, Ray Livingston from Mountain Men, and Tory Belleci from Mythbusters.

Even though the event turned into such a huge production with a lot of interest, Peniche does admit that he tries to act professional, “like I know what I’m doing. I try to give off that energy so it makes everyone else feel comfortable, but deep down, I’m constantly just giddy and just blown away that this is real life. I can’t believe this is happening right now.”

The first season of the PNW Survival Games hasn’t been revealed yet, but it will be heading to both Netflix and Amazon Prime.
