Jussie Smollett may have thought he could go back to work as if nothing happened after he allegedly staged a hate crime against himself, but he just found out he was dead wrong as his show “Empire” has been canceled.
Fox News reported that it was just announced that “Empire” will be ending after next year’s season six with no plans to bring back Smollett’s character at all in the coming months. This was announced in a press call over the weekend by Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier.
“We’re turning the final season of Empire into a large television event. If you look at what we’re doing with Empire… we really are trying to go out guns a-blazing,” Collier said. “One of the great benefits of announcing a final season is to allow the fans to lean in and to have the ending they deserve, and that’s everything we’re trying to do with this iconic series. Six years is a pretty remarkable run for a drama series and we feel good about it.”
When asked if Smollett’s character of Jamal will return for a final farewell, Collier said that while there are no specific plans for that, it could happen.
“At this point, we have no plans for that,” Collier said. “The writer’s room for next season hasn’t even gathered yet.”
This comes weeks after Americans everywhere were outraged when Smollett’s contract was extended for the next season of “Empire.” While there are no plans to have him appear next season yet, this means that he will indeed be paid for it.
“We’ve been told that Jussie will not be on ‘Empire’ in the beginning of the season but he appreciates they have extended his contract to keep Jamal’s future open,” a spokesperson for Smollett said. “Most importantly he is grateful to Fox and ‘Empire’ leadership, cast, crew, and fans for their unwavering support.”
It’s outrageous that Smollett is still getting a paycheck after he allegedly staged a hate crime on himself and tried to pin it on supporters of Donald Trump. That’s why I’m glad that his show is coming to an end, and that he will at least be out of the job at this time next year. Had a conservative staged a hate crime against himself and pinned it on a conservative, he would have immediately been blacklisted by Hollywood, and Smollett deserves this same treatment. We can only hope that once “Empire” is finally over, Smollett never works in the entertainment industry again.
