Back in September, we reported that the television personality Katie Couric had announced that she has breast cancer. Now, Couric is speaking out to give fans an update about how her cancer battle is going.
I ❤️ @katiecouric so much. For all the obvious trailblazing, culture shifting, news-maker, bad-assery you’d expect but also because she’s always so kind … and sassy. Thanks Katie for all the fun moments over the years, last night included… @kencen pic.twitter.com/OEsW47rZE1

Couric Gives Health Update
“I’m doing great. I’m feeling great,” Couric, 65, told Entertainment Tonight. “I’m really lucky. Like one in three women, I was diagnosed with cancer. But, you know, I was very fortunate because early detection is everything and it was detected early. So, it’s not only treatable, it’s curable. And that’s why everyone needs to get screened.”
Couric went on to say that while she thought about keeping her diagnosis private, she decided to go public to raise awareness in the hopes of helping others.
“I know that early detection saves lives,” she explained. “And I know a lot of people skip their mammograms because of the pandemic. And I wanted to make sure people knew that they have to get their mammograms. And if they have dense breasts, they should talk to their medical provider about getting ultrasounds. So, you know, listen, I made it my mission to try to increase cancer awareness. So, this is just another step towards that goal.”

While Couric has found the support that she’s received to be “flattering,” she’s staying humble by reminding herself that she’s just one of millions of people who are battling cancer.
“I think we all need to be advocates for our own health and support cancer research,” she said. “So one day, you know, we’ll see the end of cancer. Maybe not in my lifetime, but hopefully in my daughter’s lifetime.”
Couric Attends Kennedy Center Honors
Couric made these comments while attending the Kennedy Center Honors over the weekend.
“The Kennedy Center Honors is one of my favorite events of the year,” she said. “If I’m not here, I always watch it on television. I grew up in the Washington, D.C. area, so this is like coming home for me and to be able to celebrate these magnificent artists. I mean, what’s better than that? I was hanging out in the green room, and it was like, ‘Hey, Don Cheadle. Hey, George. Hey, Amal.’ No big deal. ‘Hey, Julia. Hey, Matt Damon.’ I mean, come on.”

Couric shocked the world back in September when she took to Instagram to reveal that she was diagnosed with breast cancer in June.
“Every two minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States. On June 21st, I became one of them,” Couric wrote. “As we approach #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth, I wanted to share my personal story with you all and encourage you to get screened and understand that you may fall into a category of women who needs more than a mammogram.”

Couric Gets Treatment
Couric is lucky in that she has a highly treatable form of breast cancer. She has since undergone “breast conservation” surgery, also known as a “lumpectomy,” according to ET.
“I can’t tell you how many times during this experience I thanked God that it was 2022. And how many times I silently thanked all the dedicated scientists who have been working their a**es off to develop better ways to analyze and treat breast cancer,” she said. “But to reap the benefits of modern medicine, we need to stay on top of our screenings, advocate for ourselves, and make sure everyone has access to the diagnostic tools that could very well save their life.”
