The former President Jimmy Carter, 99, has been in hospice care for the past three months. Now, his grandson Jason Carter is speaking out to give an update on how he is doing.

Update On Jimmy Carter

Jason told the Associated Press that Jimmy and his 95 year-old wife Rosalynn have been staying positive despite their circumstances.

“They’re just meeting with family right now, but they’re doing it in the best possible way: the two of them together at home,” Jason said. “They’ve been together 70-plus years.”

Jason went on to say that the couple has been leaning on their strong Christian faith during this difficult time.

“They also know that they’re not in charge,” Jason said. “Their faith is really grounding in this moment. In that way, it’s as good as it can be.”

Jimmy Enters Hospice

After a series of hospital stays, Jimmy announced back in February that he would no longer receive any medical intervention, and would instead spend whatever time he has left with his family.

Jason said that since then, many tributes have been pouring in for his grandfather from around the world.

“That’s been one of the blessings of the last couple of months,” Jason Carter added. “He is certainly getting to see the outpouring and it’s been gratifying to him for sure.”

Jason concluded by saying that Jimmy, who is the longest living president in American history, is still enjoying  peanut butter ice cream, which is his favorite flavor. Jimmy was famously a peanut farmer before becoming president in 1977.

“They’re just like all of y’all’s grandparents — I mean, to the extent y’all’s grandparents are rednecks from south Georgia,” Jason said. “If you go down there even today, next to their sink they have a little rack where they dry Ziplock bags.”

Jimmy’s U.N. Ambassador Speaks Out

Andrew Young, who served as Jimmy’s U.N. Ambassador, spoke out to say that he visited the Carters “a few weeks back” and was “very pleased we could laugh and joke about old times.”

Young, 91, added that during his younger days as a politician from south Georgia, Jimmy believed “that the world can come to Georgia and show everybody how to live together.” Now, Georgia “looks like the whole world,” according to Young.

While Jimmy is not exactly the most popular president in many circles, Young feels that he will one day get the appreciation that he deserves historically.

“I told him, ‘you know, it took them over 50 years to appreciate President Lincoln. It may take that long to appreciate you,’” he said.

We’ll have to see about that.

Jimmy’s Future

As for Jimmy’s future, his grandson thinks he may not be quite finished yet.

“We did think that when he went into hospice it was very close to the end,” he said. “Now, I’m just going to tell you, he’s going to be 99 in October.”

While we certainly do not agree with Jimmy Carter’s politics, and were not fans of his abysmal presidency, we would never wish death upon anyone. Please join us in saying a prayer for him and his family in the weeks and months to come.
