11. Jimi Hendrix
Jimi Hendrix was an American musician who is considered to be one of the most influential electric guitarists in history, as well as one of the most popular musicians of the 20th century. He is described as “the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music” by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
As a young man, Hendrix had several run-ins with the law and was given a choice to join the military instead of going to prison. Hendrix officially enlisted on May 31, 1961, and completed his basic training at Fort Ord in California. Hendrix was then assigned to the 101st Airborne Division and was stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
While in the military, Hendrix was repeatedly criticized for his behavior and was often caught napping while on duty and failing to report for bed checks. While Hendrix signed up for three years of service, his repeated bad behavior resulted in him receiving an early honorable discharge on the basis of unsustainability.
