When legendary comedian Carol Burnett began trending on Twitter on Monday afternoon, fans went into panic mode thinking that the 89-year-old may be dead. Thankfully, Burnett is still very much alive, and she was actually trending for a far more positive reason.

The New York Post reported that Burnett began trending on Monday because fans want her to host “Saturday Night Live!” The NBC show had made a post asking fans who they’d like to see host “Saturday Night Live!” next season and Burnett’s name was mentioned in response so many times that she soon began to trend.

“Carol Burnett was trending and y’all scared the hell outta me,” one fan tweeted after finding out the true reason she was trending. “They just want her to host SNL. How in the world has this comedic genius not been given this platform.”

“I saw Carol Burnett trending and almost had a heart attack. Fortunately, it’s just because people want her to host SNL, which, I mean: HELL YEAH,” another wrote, with a third tweeting, “Seeing Carol Burnett trending and it’s because people want her to host SNL. Shew. Was going to have a bit of a sad moment there.”

Burnett Has Never Been Asked To Host

Though Burnett has a ton of experience in sketch comedy, as was shown during her time hosting “The Carol Burnett Show” from 1967 until 1978, she shockingly has never hosted “Saturday Night Live!” The late television personality Larry King was stunned to hear this while interviewing her in 2016.

“You’re kidding. They’ve never had Carol?” an incredulous King asked a serious Burnett. “Would you host it? You should host it.”

“If I was asked,” she replied with a smile.

Fans Call On NBC To Take Action

One Twitter user pointed out that Burnett would be the oldest person ever to host “Saturday Night Live!” if she does it. The person who currently holds that record is Betty White, who hosted the NBC show in 2010 at the age of 88.

“Carol Burnett is 89 years old and has never hosted SNL. NBC end this madness now,” another user demanded.

“Carol Burnett!!! MAKE IT HAPPEN!!,” wrote one fan, with someone else saying, “She’s long overdue. C’mon.”

Other names that fans replied that they’d like to see host the show include Dolly Parton, Steve Martin, Harrison Ford, Martin Short, and Taylor Swift. It remains to be seen if NBC will take any of this into account for the coming season.

Burnett Still As Busy As Ever

Despite the fact that she is turning 90 next year, Burnett is still as busy as ever. She recently guest starred on multiple episodes of “Better Call Saul,” and she will appear as a series regular on the Apple scripted comedy series “Mrs. American Pie.” She will be playing the character of Norma, who is “the grande dame of Palm Beach high society,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In the end, Burnett has made no secret of the fact that she has no plans to retire.

“For me it keeps the old grey matter ticking… It keeps me young,” she once said of working, according to The Guardian.

Assuming she still wants the gig, we hope that NBC listens to fans and asks Burnett to host “Saturday Night Live!” in the coming months. Can you imagine how fun it would be to see Burnett still showing off her sketch comedy chops at nearly 90? Now that would be must-see TV!
