Popular comedian and actor Billy Crystal believes cancel culture and political correctness is ruining comedy. While promoting his new movie Here Today, he remarked that comedy is “becoming a minefield” and he doesn’t like it.

The iconic When Harry Met Sally star recognizes that today’s acceptable limits on comedy are changing entertainment and that’s not a good thing.

Billy Crystal Says Comedy Is “Becoming A Minefield”

“It’s becoming a minefield and I get it,” Billy Crystal told the New York Post about working in comedy today. “I don’t like it, I understand it … I just keep doing what I’m doing and that’s all you can do right now.

“It’s a totally different world [now] and it doesn’t mean you have to like it,” he continued with a chuckle.

Billy Crystal isn’t the first comedian to complain about cancel culture. Dave Chappelle takes direct aim at it in his Netflix special “Sticks and Stones.”

While Crystal isn’t as forceful as Chappelle with his criticism, it’s remarkable to have a rather legendary and rather polite comedian to take stand on today’s wokeness.

Criticizing cancel culture has put Billy Crystal in the crosshairs of the woke brigade.

A quick search of Twitter shows numerous people with blue checkmarks lashing out at him. Some believe the color of the actor’s skin disqualifies him from having this opinion.

Billy Crystal Trends On Twitter

After the Post article went live, Billy Crystal was suddenly trending on Twitter over his “minefield comment.”

This really proves his point that political correctness is ruining comedy. A benign comment has resulted in accusations of racism against the Jewish comedian.

“Here Today”

Billy Crystal apparently sensed that these answers could cause him troubles as he promotes Here Today.

The City Slickers actor then smartly steered the interview back to his new movie which has him opposite Tiffany Haddish.

In the new movie, Crystal portrays an aging comedy writer who is battling dementia but trying to hide his condition from others. He is writing a book and wants to finish it before he loses all his words.

He strikes up a non traditional friendship with a young singer played by Haddish. She ends up helping care for him. Anyone who is alleging Crystal to be racist should certainly watch this movie as it shatters that awful accusation.

“That’s something that we really need more of, the country, and that is empathy and that’s what I think is the beautiful part of this friendship,” Crystal said about the movie.

“She gives up a chance for her career to move forward to take care of him. And I think that’s a beautiful thing.”
