One of the biggest global franchises in gaming history is coming back to the screens, but this time as a TV series. That’s right, the live-action Assassin’s Creed TV series has officially been greenlit at Netflix, only five years after the initial announcement. Here’s everything we know about the series so far.

The beloved franchise began in 2007, created by the French video game publisher Ubisoft, and currently has 14 games in the franchise. In the game, fans play as fictional characters who are historical Assassins throughout impactful timelines in history. You interact with important characters in history, all while collecting powerful artifacts known as Pieces of Eden, to prevent catastrophic events.

These timelines in which you play through include the Renaissance, Ancient Egypt, the Middle Ages, and many more. You’ll meet several individuals who either have a minor or even major role in the story, including Benjamin Franklin, Brasidas, Blackbeard, Charles Dickens, Queen Victoria, Aspasia, and more.
But this won’t be the first time that the Assassin’s Creed franchise made it to the TV and movie screen, as there was a film released in 2016 starring Michael Fassbender. It unfortunately didn’t live up to gamers’ standards, with a low 5.6 out of 10 rating on IMDb and a disappointing 18% on Tomatometer.

So what about the upcoming live-action Assassin’s Creed TV series that will be on Netflix? “Assassin’s Creed is a high-octane thriller centered on the secret war between two shadowy factions – one set on determining mankind’s future through control and manipulation, while the other fights to preserve free will,” the upcoming show’s logline reads. “The series follows its characters across pivotal historical events as they battle to shape humanity’s destiny.”

“When we first announced our partnership with Ubisoft in 2020, we set out with an ambitious goal to bring the rich, expansive world of Assassin’s Creed to life in bold new ways,” said Netflix’s Vice President, Peter Friedlander. “Now, after years of dedicated collaboration, it’s inspiring to see just how far that vision has come.”
Netflix’s upcoming series will continue its run of gaming adaptations, following in the footsteps of the likes of Castlevania, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Arcane, and more.
