Sometimes news is sad and today is one of those days. “Rowdy” Roddy Piper passed away in his sleep on Thursday at 61 years old. He was a phenomenal villain, babyface and wrestler. Piper left his mark in the pro wrestling business and in honor, here are some memorable moments.
WrestleNewz sends its condolence to the Piper family and anyone affected by this loss. There might never be a wrestler to wear a kilt and be as great as Piper.
- If it wasn’t for Hulk Hogan being the person Vince McMahon wanted as the star attraction, then Roddy Piper would have won the WWE championship. He proved that one doesn’t need a belt to get over.
- Heading into WrestleMania I, nobody knew if this show would become a success. WrestleMania is now an annual event that fans pay several thousands of dollars to attend. Piper wrestling in the inaugural main event is something only a few people can take credit for.
- Give Roddy Piper a microphone and he’ll have the audience listening to every word that comes from his mouth. Before all these talk shows in the WWE, there was Piper’s Pit. From hitting Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka with a coconut to taking a stunner from Steve Austin at WrestleMania 21, the gift of gab came natural to Piper.
- While Roddy Piper may have never won the WWE championship, he’s held plenty of gold. In the WWE he held the tag team and intercontinental titles; plus there are the several dozen other belts he captured across the United States.
- In 2005, Roddy Piper took his rightful place in the WWE Hall of Fame. There’s no denying Piper earned his spot and he’s a name that legitimizes such an entity.
