It appears we are headed for Dustin Poirier vs. Nate Diaz again.
Over the past few days, both fighters have closed the door on potential fights with Conor McGregor.
One could assume that means the two will instead target a bout with one another, right?
Seems likely.
Poirier was backstage at UFC 271 and held a media scrum with reporters.
“I think there’s a good chance it’s going to happen,” Poirier said of facing Diaz (thanks to MMA Fighting for the quotes). “I think summer is probably a good target if I were to put one on a calendar, but I’m not sure.
“I have a good feeling that it’s going to happen. I’m not sure if I’m going to stay at 170 pounds, but this fight makes sense.”
As for McGregor, Poirier said “The only reason I’d do it is for money.”
Poirier earned two wins over McGregor last year after losing the first bout between the two.
“Me and Conor have a history,” he said. “I’m probably not going to fight Conor again. For me, that door is closed.”
Diaz has indicated that he would like to meet Poirier in his retirement bout. He told Adam’s Apple that McGregor “has a lot of work to do” in regards to fighting him again.
As for Poirier, in an interview with TMZ Diaz said he has been requesting that fight for several months.
“I would like to fight Dustin, like now,” Diaz said. “I’ve been trying. If there’s any mix-up it’s him, and them, and the game.”
