It hasn’t been looking good lately, in terms of Khabib Nurmagomedov fighting Tony Ferguson at UFC 249, April 18th. If you’ve been holding out hope that the all-star bout could still take place in a couple of weeks time, well, it looks like the lightweight champ’s confirmed that’s not happening.
Nurmagomedov responds to fans who believe he should risk fighting at UFC 249
As you likely know, UFC President Dana White has been trying to find a way to hold UFC 249, despite the fact many jurisdictions have banned public gatherings and international travel. Recently Russia announced that it has banned travel in-and-out of the country. Since Nurmagomedov returned to Russia before the ban was enacted, his ability to attend UFC 249 has been in serious doubt.
Well, more recently, the galaxy-class grappler shared out the statement below. As you’ll see, it certainly looks like Nurmagomedov believes he will not be fighting Ferguson at UFC 249.
Staying home in quarantine and reading the reaction of people to the situation around my fight, it turns out that the whole world should be in quarantine, governments of all countries, famous people around the world urge people to follow all safety requirements in order to limit the spread of the disease, to save people, and Khabib is the only one relieved of all obligations and must demonstrate free will and train flying around the world, for the sake of fight? – I understand everything and I’m definitely upset more than you to cancel the fight, probably like all others, I had many plans after the fight, but I can’t control it all.
The greatest countries and the largest companies of our time are shocked by what is happening, every day the situation changes unpredictably.
But Khabib still has to fight, is that what you saying? –
Take care of yourself and put yourself in my shoes.
Response?
So, no one should be surprised to hear that it looks all but certain Khabib won’t fight on April 18th. Now the big question is will anyone fight at UFC 249? There’s certainly no shortage of people who believe that the UFC should just postpone the card, and not risk having any fighter, coach, etc. contract or spread the virus (while the pandemic continues to grow).
