Since Jorge Masvidal defeated Nate Diaz at UFC 244 earlier this month, there’s been a lot of speculation about who “Gamebred” will fight next. Well, nothing has been signed yet, but there’s certainly indications that Masvidal and Nick Diaz are on a collision path.
Masvidal’s win over Nate Diaz and talk of a rematch
After Masvidal recorded a TKO win over Nate Diaz, via a doctor stoppage, the latter immediately called for a rematch. Masvidal said he was willing to throw hands with Diaz again, but UFC President Dana White didn’t sound overly interested in running the fight back immediately.
Well, not long after UFC 244 went down, Nate’s older brother Nick spoke with ESPN. During the interview, Diaz relayed he didn’t care for Masvidal’s comments about his wish to “baptize” Nate. Then his manager confirmed Nick wants to fight “Gamebred” next.
Masvidal is pumped to fight Nick Diaz
Masvidal recently did Brendan Schaub’s “Food Truck Diaries“, and of course, he was asked about the possibility of fighting Nick. Here’s some of what the rugged star had to say (quotes via MMA Junkie):
“If he’s got that fire lit under him, I know we’re going to have a fight,” Masvidal said. “I know Nick’s a dog. He’s going to take whatever I can give, and I’m going to give him everything that I got to hit the off button, to turn him off, as well, so I’m excited for the fight.
“I know he wants to hurt me. He has to avenge his little brother, so it’s a fight that pumps me up.”
“…I’ve always liked Nick’s style, as well. I’ve always liked how he scraps. I never thought he was the most skilled guy, but I think he’s one of the guys with the biggest heart, you know? Would just lay it all out there, win or lose. He’d always give it his all, and that’s something that I truly admire, that quality in a fighter. If he’s the fastest, strongest, it’s good, but my favorite quality in a fighter is the dog, is the guy that just doesn’t take no for an answer – even if he gets beat up, but he just never took no for an answer.”
So, we’ll see what happens here. Obviously this fight makes sense on a business level, and you know the UFC is interested. But, it’s important to remember Nick hasn’t fought since 2015. So, until the bout is signed and delivered, don’t bet the farm on Masvidal fighting Nick next.
If talks with Nick stall, and Colby Covington wins the welterweight title at UFC 245 next month, the UFC could take a long look at Covington – Masvidal next.
