Many people opined there was no way we’d see Frankie Edgar fight Chan Sung Jung and then Cory Sandhagen one month later, and that prediction was indeed accurate.
Edgar could be sidelined for months
Edgar raised eyebrows not long ago by agreeing to fight Jung at UFC Busan this past Saturday, when Brian Ortega went down with a knee injury. Edgar had already announced he was planning to drop down to bantamweight and he was booked to fight Sandhagen on January 25th. The plan was that if Edgar emerged unscathed from his fight with “The Korean Zombie”, he’d still fight Sandhagen.
Well, as you likely know, Edgar was quickly stopped by Jung at UFC Busan. Since then, it’s been reported (via Mixed Martial Arts.com) that Edgar has received the following medical suspensions:
180 Days to Edgar unless cleared by oral and maxillofacial doctor for right orbital injury – 60 Days Mandatory and 45 No Contact
While it remains to be seen if Edgar is sidelined for six months, he won’t be eligible to fight Sandhagen (and really, one would think the former champ’s team, family or the UFC wouldn’t have signed off on that anymore anyways).
Sandhagen comments on the situation
Now it remains to be seen what’s next for Sandhagen. More recently the bantamweight contender posted the comments below on Instagram:
Bouts with Dominick Cruz, Marlon Moraes or Petr Yan all sound good no?
