The pop superstar Taylor Swift has just learned that she is the descendant of a very famous figure.

Swift’s Famous Relative

The Genealogy company Ancestry has discovered that Swift, 34, is related to the legendary 19th century American poet Emily Dickinson, with the two of them being sixth cousins, three times removed.

“Swift and Dickinson both descend from a 17th century English immigrant (Swift’s 9th great-grandfather and Dickinson’s 6th great-grandfather who was an early settler of Windsor, Connecticut),” Ancestry told TODAY.

“Taylor Swift’s ancestors remained in Connecticut for six generations until her part of the family eventually settled in northwestern Pennsylvania, where they married into the Swift family line,” Ancestry continued.

Ancestry also announced this news on Instagram.

“We need to calm down…but how can we when we have BIG news!?” the post read. “Renowned American poets Taylor Swift and Emily Dickinson are 6th cousins, three times removed.”

Swift’s References To Dickinson

This revelation is even more surprising given the fact that Swift previously referenced Dickinson, who lived from 1830-1886, while discussing the different types of lyrics she writes for her songs.

“If my lyrics sound like a letter written by Emily Dickinson’s great-grandmother while sewing a lace curtain, that’s me writing in the Quill genre,” Swift said two years ago while accepting the Songwriter-Artist of the Decade Award from the Nashville Songwriters Association International.

While talking about her album “Folklore” in 2020, Swift told Entertainment Weekly that she had an idea for “this girl sleepwalking through the forest in a nightgown in 1830,” which happens to be the year that Dickinson was born.

People Magazine reported that fans have speculated that Swift’s album “Evermore” was inspired by Dickinson. It was released on December 10, 2020, which is Dickinson’s birthday, and the title of it references the last word of Dickinson’s poem “One Sister have I in Our House.”

“From out the wide night’s numbers — Sue forevermore!” the last line reads.

Swift’s Next Album

Swift is currently preparing for the release of her album “The Tortured Poets Department,” which is set to drop next month. She announced the album at the Grammy Awards last month while accepting the award for best pop vocal album for her 2022 album “Midnights.”

“I want to say thank you to the members of the Recording Academy for voting this way. But I know that the way that the Recording Academy voted is a direct reflection of the passion of the fans,” Swift said. “So I want to say thank you to the fans by telling you a secret that I’ve been keeping from you for the last two years, which is that my brand new album comes out on April 19.”

“It’s called ‘The Tortured Poets Department,'” she added. “I’m gonna go and post the cover right now backstage. Thank you. I love you. Thank you.”

Page Six reported that Swift is currently in Singapore, with her last performance taking place last night. She’s set to perform three more shows there this week before taking a break and then resuming her tour in France in May.

At the time of this writing, Swift has yet to speak out publicly to address being related to Dickinson. It would certainly be interesting to get her thoughts on this shocking revelation!
