The country music star Lainey Wilson is speaking out about being spat on by a fan while she was onstage performing. The way that she responded has fans applauding her for being a true class act.

Wilson Recalls Getting Spat On

“Last year when we were on our headlinin’ tour, somebody spit on me, on stage,” Wilson, 32, told Taste of Country.

What would you do in that situation?

Well, Wilson admitted that she was tempted to storm off the stage and confront whoever had disrespected her in such a disgusting way. Instead, she opted to take the high road.

“I thought about getting down there and finding whoever it was, but I didn’t,” she recalled. “I kept rolling.”

Nevertheless, Wilson was still left shaken by the ordeal.

“First of all, I was like, ‘Why in the world would you buy a ticket and then go spit on somebody?'” she stated.

“There’s some mean people in the world,” she lamented. “Also, they could have just been drunk and just being silly.”

To this day, Wilson can vividly remember the spit flying toward her like a scene out of The Matrix!

“It was weird, I saw it like coming through the air,” she added. “It was like I made eye contact with the spit and it just lands on me and I’m just like, (singing) ‘I got a heart like a truck.’ That’s how I felt.”

Thankfully, Wilson didn’t let this get to her too much. Unlike many other entertainers, Wilson comes from humble beginnings that have equipped her with some serious street smarts.

Wilson’s History

Wilson grew up in Baskin, Louisiana, which is a small town of nearly 200 people. Once she reached adulthood, she moved to Nashville, Tennessee in the hopes of making her country music dreams come true. There, she sadly had some “dark days” as she struggled to make it in the industry for quite some time.

Wilson even spent three years living in a Flagstaff bumper-pull camper trailer that was parked in her mentor’s studio parking lot.

“When I decided I needed to be here full time, I ended up buying a camper trailer and moving it to Nashville,” Wilson recounted earlier this year. “I lived in it the first three years I was here and finished college in it…”

‘Dark Days’ For Wilson

Indeed, living in this camper was far from easy for Wilson.

“There has been some dark days for me. I was very lonely,” she admitted. “I didn’t know hardly anybody in town,” she confessed. “Tornadoes would roll through, the tornado sirens would be going off. The winters were cold, I’d have to sleep in three or four jackets, three pairs of socks just to stay warm.”

Meanwhile, Wilson returned to the site of her former home in 2022. Being back there left her feeling a great sense of sadness.

“I feel a sense of hopefulness standing here, but I also feel a little sadness,” she confessed. “There were a lot of dark days for me. I was very lonely. I didn’t know hardly anybody in town.”

These difficult experiences made Wilson the strong woman that she is today. While it’s despicable that she was spat on in the first place, we applaud Wilson for handling the situation with class and dignity. In the end, Wilson is a role model that young girls everywhere can look up to. That’s hard to find among celebrities these days!
