Unfortunately, the wait is even longer, as news has spread that the live-action Zelda movie is delayed, according to Nintendo.

The Legend of Zelda franchise is easily the biggest gaming franchises, especially for Nintendo, apart from the Mario franchise. And when news got around that a live-action movie was in the making, fans were instantly hooked.

However, in a statement posted on X, Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed that the movie was being relayed “for production reasons.” The film’s original release date was March 26th, 2027, but it has not since been pushed to May 7th, 2027. While it’s only a couple of months, it’s still sad to see delays already happening.
The X post said, “It will be some weeks later than the release timing we originally announced, and we will take the extra time to make the film as good as it can be. Thank you for your patience.”
This is Miyamoto. For production reasons, we are changing the release date of the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda to May 7, 2027. It will be some weeks later than the release timing we originally announced, and we will take the extra time to make the film as good as it…

The movie was originally announced back in November 2023, and not much has been revealed. The movie is being directed by Wes Ball, the man behind The Maze Runner and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
As far as the casting and plot go, there isn’t really much to talk about. There have been rumors that Hunter Schafer was being eyed to play Princess Zelda in the live-action. Schafer is known for her role in Euphoria (2019-present) as Jules Vaughn, as well as The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023) and Cuckoo (2024). It’s hard to deny her likeness to the powerful princess of Hyrule.

Along with that rumor, Briana White, who provided the voice for Aerith in Final Fantasy 7, has expressed interest, saying, “I just wanna audition for Zelda so bad. Just an audition.”

Apart from that, not much has been shared. The Legend of Zelda games tend to focus on Link, a courageous young man of the elf-like Hylian race, who must fight and save the magical land of Hyrule from Ganon, an evil warlord turned demon kind, and save Princess Zelda. While the plot has not been uncovered, surely some form of this premise will be seen in the movies as well.
While delays are unfortunate, the gaming community hopes that the extra time will mean an amazing watching experience so viewers can have a new adventure in Hyrule.
