It has been revealed that Yahoo’s 2013 data breach affected every single one of its accounts. Originally, it was announced that 1 billion accounts were impacted but the actual number is three times that size!

Verizon recently bought Yahoo and revised the number of accounts that were affected after receiving more information. “The company recently obtained new intelligence and now believes, following an investigation with the assistance of outside forensic experts, that all Yahoo user accounts were affected by the August 2013 theft,” Verizon’s statement about the breach read.

Former Department of Defense Cyber Security expert Jay Kaplan said, “Frankly, I don’t know how Yahoo got away with this.” The 2013 hack was followed by another one in 2014 that was conducted by Russian spies and hackers.

The 2013 breach included names, email addresses, and passwords. The video below has information on how to make sure this information isn’t used to hack into your other accounts.

Hackers continue making online life challenging. Companies have a responsibility to not only protect their customer’s information but also inform them when it is breached. Yahoo failed big time.
