woman sweats blood

A 21-year-old Italian woman has been living a bit of nightmare for the past three years. She has been sweating blood repeatedly for a period of time between one and five minutes. Her case has been highlighted in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ). Doctors haven’t released her name to protect her privacy.

Doctors have confirmed that she does have a modern day stigmata of sorts. The blood sweats from her face and the palms of her hands. This happens when she is sleeping or physically active. The bleeding is more intense when she is under stress.

Doctors confirmed that this is blood she is sweating. She has been diagnosed with hematohidrosis, a rare condition in which people sweat blood from unbroken pores. The Italian woman has baffled her doctors as she sweats blood in areas of her body without any pores.

Doctors are treating the woman with propranolol, a heart, and blood pressure medication. This has helped decrease her symptoms, but she continues sweating blood.

Canadian medical historian Jacalyn Duffin researched this condition. She found a case of a 12-year-old boy in the 17th century who had the same symptoms. It appears incredibly rare. Oddly there have been more modern cases, 18 of them since 2000.

A Tennessee teen name Calvino Inman was profiled in 2009. The video below explains how he cries tears of blood.

It’s hard to imagine dealing with crying or sweating blood. The social stigma must be a lot to bear. But, researchers are apparently baffled as to why there is a recent uptick in these cases. 18 cases worldwide since 2000 isn’t many, but it does make you wonder what could have caused this increase.

Centuries ago, people might have given religious reasons for bleeding or sweating blood. Today, doctors are searching for medical clues.

Share this if you are glad you don’t have this condition!
