The US military is thinking out of the box to help protect soldiers from chemical weapons. They are looking at an unusual line of defense to combat a chemical attack – sharks.

The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) is experimenting with shark antibodies to protect members of our military against this awful threat. The Defense Threat Reduction Agency’s Joint Science and Technology Office is funding this research in hopes of developing new ways to detect chemical weapons and treat those affected by them.

Detection is an important part of the process given the fact that chemical weapons are often odorless and not noticeable until the effects are felt. Often by the time the symptoms arrive, it is too late for the victim and death or permanent damage may have already taken hold.

The hope is that shark antibodies can be used with military sensors to detect chemical weapons. They also could be used to help detect if someone has been exposed to a chemical weapon.

This project might sound far-fetched, but if it works it would be rather cost-effective. And when you think of a shark’s ability to perceive things like a tiny drop of blood in a massive area of water, it’s plausible that this could be translated to detect chemical weapons. We must look for creative solutions to protect our soldiers, especially when seconds matter!
