If you’re going to the beach this 4th of July holiday, and you’re anything like me, you’ll want a nice easy read to devour under the umbrella. And since it is the 4th of July, let’s dive into some pro-America books that tell stories of how unique our beautiful country is.
What Makes A Good Beach Read?
A good beach should meet most or all of the following criteria:
- Relatively short (Less than 400 pages)
- Straightforward plot (nothing post-modern, no Thomas Pynchon)
- A happy ending (again, nothing post-modern)
- Preferably comes in paperback form (easier to tote)
The Best Patriotic Reads For The Beach On the 4th Of July
In general, don’t bring your serious, weighty tomes to the beach. You want something you can pick and put down throughout the day. Another great thing about these books is that they’re all broken up into very manageable chapters. That way you can take a nap or go for a swim and not be totally lost when you come back.

1776 By David McCullough
Popular history David McCullough’s books on America’s founders are all great. And while his book about John Adams (and the subsequent HBO series) gets a lot of attention, his book about the beginnings of the American Revolution is also good. Not only do you get a broader picture of George Washington, but also a more in-depth look at the state of the American military and how a ragtag group of farmers was able to hold off the seasoned British Army.
David McCullough’s book 1776 recounts the major battles, trials and tribulations of this singular year during the Revolutionary War. It is a very relevant read as we celebrate our Army’s 246th birthday. #21stCenturyCSAReadingList pic.twitter.com/kZQSeQ2R5l

Killing England By Bill O’Reilly
Bill O’Reilly’s “Killing” series is an easy and informative read that takes you behind the headlines of some of history’s biggest moments. Killing England tells the story of the American Revolution and the brutal wars that our Founding Fathers battled in for our freedom.

The Hunt For Red October By Tom Clancy
You could pick any of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan series as a great thriller to read on the beach. But this one is the best and my favorite. Not only that but it’s the best Clancy-based movie. So after reading it on the beach you should check out the film version back home.
