Ever since the death of George Floyd in May, anti-cop sentiments have been at an all-time high in the United States. Police officers are not getting the respect that they deserve. That’s why this story is so heartwarming. A struggling single mother donated her lottery winnings to a police officer.
Single Mother Struggles Amidst Coronavirus Pandemic
WFLA reported that Shetara Sims is a single mother from Kansas City, Missouri who has only $7 to her name and her bills past due. Like many Americans, Sims has been struggling during the coronavirus pandemic.
And, things only got worse for her when she lost her job last month.
However, things recently turned around for Sims when she found a $1 bill in a grocery store parking lot. She used it to purchase a scratch off lottery ticket and won $100.
Afterward, Sims’ 12 year-old daughter Rakiya Edmonson suggested that they donate the lottery winnings to a local police officer who had been in intensive care since being shot in the line of duty on July 2.
Edmonson explained:
“She won $100, and I said we should donate it to the police officer that got shot for his family to go eat and see him.”
Despite the struggles her family is facing right now, Sims thought this was a wonderful idea.

Reason Behind Sims’ Donation To Police
Sims’ older daughter, Edmonson’s big sister, was murdered in 2012, and their family has never forgotten how the Kansas City police officers stepped up to help them through this unimaginable tragedy.
“The detectives were really there for us,” Sims explained. “They were there for us more than anyone I can imagine. They did things they didn’t have to do. They came to see my kids. They did a lot. They were fathers, therapists. They were everything. I never seen the empathy that they had from strangers. They just gave us hope. They were good for us.”
The local police department was touched days later when Sims called to offer her $100 donation. With everything cops have gone through in recent weeks, they really appreciated this kindness.
Police Sgt. Jake Becchina said:
“To hear her call and just express thanks for no reason other than she’s thankful, it’s really impactful to us, and it’s really touching to us.”

Police Department Surprise Sims
Sims made the donation without leaving her name and number, so it took officers days to track her down. Once they found out it was Sims who made this donation, they set up a GoFundMe account for her family that has since raised over $29,000.
This is the kind of pro-police story that we as Americans all need to see right now. God bless Sims, and God bless American police officers.
