If you’re in a rural area and see purple paint, it’s not there for decorative purposes. It’s there to tell you that you’re not welcome.

The purple paint law was enacted to prevent land owners from having to continuously replace no trespassing signs. The paint acts as a no trespassing sign.

It has to be a specific shade of purple, No Hunting Purple. This is dark enough that it is even recognizable to people who are color blind.

At least 10 states have purple paint laws.

  • Illinois
  • Missouri
  • North Carolina
  • Maine
  • Florida
  • Idaho
  • Arkansas
  • Montana
  • Arizona
  • Kansas

It’s up to people in those states or visiting those states to be aware of the law as the signs carry the same legal weight as no trespassing signs.

Trespassing is a serious issue, but one that doesn’t take a lot of effort to obey. If you are hunting, keep an eye out for purple paint.

And even if you are in an urban area, just don’t trespass. As you can see in the video below, a Sacramento man lost his life because of trespassing.

Did you know about the purple paint law?
