The Queen has made it clear how she feels about her new granddaughter-in-law Meghan Markle. Another very public display of acceptance was made when the Queen handed over one of her prized jobs to Harry’s new bride.

Markle has certainly proved her worth to the Sovereign. It was just announced that Harry and Meghan will welcome the Queen’s Young Leaders programme to Buckingham Palace. This role began in 2013 by the Queen and honors “exceptional” youth who had made changes in their community throughout the Commonwealth regarding mental health issues and combatting violence against women.

Queen Elizabeth quickly formed a bond with the American divorcee who recently married her grandson, perhaps because of their mutual love for dogs. Markle’s rescue beagle named Guy got the Royal treatment the weekend of the wedding when he shared a ride with the Queen to Windsor for the festivities.

That is another strong welcoming statement for Markle on behalf of the Sovereign.

The American recently had her solo first trip with the Queen. Their body language showed that they have become fast friends. They laughed and clearly enjoyed each other’s company.

This is a very different attitude than the Queen has had for Prince Charles’ wife Camilla Parker-Bowles. After several martinis, the Queen allegedly once referred to her daughter-in-law as “that wicked woman.” Camilla and Charles were also not permitted to be wed in the Church of England, which the Queen heads, while Meghan and Harry’s nuptials were embraced by the Church.

The job with the Queen’s Young Leaders is a favorite of Her Majesty’s, so it’s very telling that she is handing it over to Meghan and Harry. Given that Charles is next in line to the throne, it would be understanding if she passed it along to him and Camilla, but she completely bypassed them!

It will be interesting to watch the Duchess and the Queen’s relationship continue to blossom. The Sovereign’s welcoming of a divorcee who also is an American is a very interesting sight and a huge change from the past.
