Being a member of the British royal family may seem like it’s all fun and games, but there are tons of complicated rules and protocols that royal family members must follow. Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie just learned this the hard way when they were caught publicly breaking one major royal rule.

MSN reported that Beatrice and Eugenie recently signed their names on a painting of one of singer Ed Sheeran’s guitars along with their mother, Sarah Ferguson. This may seem like a normal and harmless thing to do, but it actually breaks one of the top royal rules.

Royal protocol dictates that members of the royal family never sign autographs. Even if they are asked for their autograph by a fan, royal family members are supposed to refuse to give it. This is meant to be an anti-fraud policy to prevent their names getting forged for shady activities or sold as forgeries.

This was one of the main royal rules that Meghan Markle had to learn after she married Prince Harry. Having spent years working as an actress, Meghan is used to signing autographs for her fans, so getting accustomed to saying no whenever she is asked is likely a hard adjustment for her.

While Meghan could certainly be forgiven if she were to slip up and forget this rule just weeks after becoming a royal, Beatrice and Eugenie really should have known better. They were born into the royal family and have been complying with these rules all their lives. These strict protocols are just a small price they have to pay for the extravagant lifestyles they get to live as members of the royal family.

Perhaps the royal family will be more forgiving in this situation, however, since Beatrice and Eugenie signed their names for a noble cause. The painting they signed is set to be auctioned off to benefit one of their charities, Children in Crisisso at least their hearts were in the right place here!
