Prince Harry is set to marry American actress Meghan Markle next month in what many are calling the wedding of the year. Ever since the engagement was announced, speculation has run rampant about whether or not the couple would invite the Obamas and the Trumps to their nuptials. Now, a decision about these invitations has finally been announced.

The Daily Caller reported that a Kensington Palace spokesman announced this week that no political leaders will be invited to the royal wedding, meaning the Obamas and the Trumps have been left off the invite list.

“It has been decided that an official list of political leaders – both U.K. and international – is not required for Prince Harry and Ms. Markle’s wedding,” the spokesman said. “Her Majesty’s Government was consulted on this decision, which was taken by The Royal Household.”

The fact that Barack and Michelle Obama will not be invited to the wedding has come as a surprise to some, as they are known to be personal friends of Harry and Meghan. However, sources have said in the past few months that the British government had specifically asked the couple to not invite the Obamas due to fears of offending President Donald Trump. British government officials were allegedly worried that Trump would feel snubbed if Obama were invited instead of him and that diplomatic relations between the U.S. and U.K. would sour as a result.

In the end, we’re glad that Harry and Meghan chose to not make their wedding into a political event. Queen Elizabeth has worked for decades to ensure that the British royal family remains a politically neutral body. Though Harry is friends with the Obamas, he clearly understands the importance of the royal family not taking sides in politics. Now, Harry and Meghan can enjoy their special day in peace without worrying about their wedding being politicized!
