American Meghan Markle is one step closer to becoming a member of the Royal Family after being baptized into the Church of England.

Prince Harry was at the 36-year-old Markle’s side while she was baptized by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall were also present for their future daughter-in-law’s sacramental ceremony.

Markle asked the Archbishop to lead the service after developing a close bond with him while she prepares for her new role in the Royal Family and her new religion.

The ceremony took place at the Chapel Royal. Water from the River Jordan was used to officially usher her into the Church. It was poured onto her from the Royal Family’s personal family font. The bride-to-be was confirmed immediately after her baptism. This means that she will now be permitted to receive Holy Communion with Prince Harry.

The location at Chapel Royal is significant to Harry because the body of his mother, Princess Diana, laid there for a week prior to her 1997 funeral.

Markle did not have to join the faith to marry Harry, but she chose to do so out of respect for her future grandmother-in-law Queen Elizabeth, who is the official head of the Church of England.

The 45-minute ceremony was kept under wraps because the Royal Family did not want paparazzi crashing the religious event.

Markle and Prince Harry will wed in St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle on May 19th. The wedding will be conducted by Dean of Windsor, David Connor, with the Archbishop of Canterbury presiding over the ceremony.

In accordance with tradition, Markle had two sponsors, which are similar to Godparents. It is being reported that at least one of the sponsors is a close personal friend of the American actress.

Following the Baptism, Markle and Harry participated in an International Women’s Day event, which you can see below:
