Julia Roberts’ 1997 hit film is thankfully getting a second installment, and is currently in early development at Sony Pictures. The studio has brought in Materialistis and Past Lives writer and director, Celine Song, to pen a screenplay for the project. However, there is no talk of this being her next piece to direct.
Song has proven herself time and time again that she brings exceptional stories to the screen. With her past experience, fans are excited to experience the charming and dramatic depth she creates in her stories.
This development comes after Dermot Mulroney, who starred alongside Roberts, teased that “there is talk of a sequel” when promoting his new Netflix series The Hunting Wives. When asked about a follow-up, he said, “I know nothing about it. Last I heard, quote, lawyers were talking, unquote.”

The first money focuses on Mulroney, playing Michael, and Roberts, playing Julianne, characters who are best friends. When Julianna learns that Michael is getting married, their relationship turns chaotic when Julianne realizes that she’s in love with Michael and attempts to break up the wedding.
Mulroney reflected on the movie, sharing, “I knew – and all of Hollywood knew – it was going to be an exceptional movie.”
And it was, as the film was a box office hit. And with news about the My Best Friend’s Wedding sequel, fans are hoping to experience the same connection to the film as they did in the first one.
While not much has been said, fans are thrilled to learn that something is in the works. Keep checking back for more updates to the My Best Friend’s Wedding sequel.
