It’s back to the skies for Maverick. After months of rumors and speculation, Tom Cruise has officially confirmed that Top Gun 3 is in active development.
The confirmation from the leading actor has finally quelled the uncertainty surrounding a sequel to the blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick in 2022.

Cruise Confirms During an Interview
The confirmation of the third film was during an interview with Australian television, with Cruise being asked about the future of the franchise.
When the Today reporter asked about Top Gun 3, Cruise commented, “Yes, we’re talking and thinking about many different stories, and analyzing what we can do and what’s possible. It took me 35 years to figure out Top Gun: Maverick. But all these things we’re working on, we’re discussing them…”
Rumors Since Top Gun: Maverick’s Release
There have been several rumors from actors in the franchise, circulating almost immediately after the success of Top Gun: Maverick in 2022. While most of these rumors have been discarded or led to no further confirmation, Cruise’s belief in a third film adds weight to these whispers.
Perhaps we will really see Maverick on another mission after all.

Possible Plot for Top Gun 3
While early speculation hinted that Top Gun 3 would shift away from Cruise’s character, and instead give the spotlight to younger pilots like Rooster (Miles Teller) or Hangman (Glen Powell), producer Jerry Bruckheimer quickly addressed these rumors.
“The protagonist will be Tom Cruise,” Bruckheimer told Screen Rant in March 2024. “Tom is amazing. We’ve spent a lot of time with him. We have a story…so we’re developing it.”
However, questions about Cruise’s age keep this statement in limbo, especially since it took thirty-six years to get a sequel.
We can guarantee that the newest addition will have similar elements to the past two, though, such as practical effects, real flight sequences, further exploration of Maverick’s mentorship, advanced military technology, and the return of key characters from the second film.
When Will Top Gun 3 Come Out?
The real question is – when will the film come out? With over three decades between the first two films, fans will be wondering how long the next sequel will take, especially when meeting the high expectations set by the predecessors.
Only time will tell, but we do know Cruise has a lot of projects set before him now. Perhaps patience is required for the third film, and we’ll just have to rewatch Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick until it comes out.

Other Cruise Projects
Tom Cruise never seems to stop.
During an interview, he said, “There’s numerous other films that we’re actively working on right now. I’m always shooting a film, prepping a film, posting a film. I just finished a film with Alejandro Iñárritu too, … and we’ll be coming out with that. That was an extraordinary experience and [Christopher McQuarrie] and I are always working on several different films.”
Cruise’s most recent work, Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning, is about to hit theaters.
