You know her, you love her, and now she’s gone from us.

Beloved actress Shelly Duvall, best known for her legendary performance in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, has passed away at age 75.

Shelly Duvall Passes Away

Duvall’s partner, Dan Gilroy, confirmed her passing Thursday in Blanco, Texas due to complications from diabetes.

Duvall’s career spanned at least five decades, culminating with her retirement in 2002.

While she is best known for her portrayal as the extremely-distressed-damsel Wendy Torrance in The Shining, Duvall has a lot of excellent film credits to her name.

She was also known for her work with director Robert Altman, beginning in her 1970 debut in Brewster McCloud.

Another of her most celebrated roles came in Altman’s Nashville in 1975, and casting directors couldn’t possibly have picked a better actress to play Popeye’s pal Olive Oyl in yet another Altman production.

Duvall’s Later Life

After retiring in 2002, Duvall apparently struggled with mental illness.

She said as much in 2017 on a controversial episode of Dr. Phil. Some, including other Hollywood luminaries, felt she was being exploited by the TV doctor.

Her defenders ranged from Stanley Kubrick’s daughter Vivian to fellow actress Mia Farrow.

However, a few years later in 2021, Duvall was redeemed thanks to the help of Hollywood Reporter reporter Seth Abramovitch – who was so incensed with the Dr. Phil episode that he wanted to help her leave a better legacy.

Shelly Duvall was a great actress and by all accounts, a great person. She will be dearly missed and fondly remember by millions of fans around the world!
