What is Thunderbolts About?

Directed by Jake Schreier, Thunderbolts focuses on a team of anti-heroes, now described as the dysfunctional “New Avengers.”

The film has notable characters from past MCU projects, including Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Wyatt Russell as John Walker, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, and Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost.

The predominantly lone-wolf characters are forced into working together following a death trap set by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, and must overcome and reconcile with their troubled histories.

The film has a runtime of just over two hours and includes a mid-credits scene and a significant post-credits scene that hints at future implications within the MCU timeline.

While the box office performance was deemed underwhelming, Thunderbolts has been lauded by several critics for its fresh take on the superhero genre.

The movie has an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 7.2/10 rating on IMDb. The Daily Record highlighted the effective portrayal of a “terrific, turbulent team” and praised the exploration of human emotions and psychological depth.

The Los Angeles Times echoes this feeling, describing the film as “of undeniable merit” and a standout among recent Marvel entries.

However, some mixed reviews claim the film didn’t always land perfectly throughout the scenes.
